Nam Cheong Group Unveils Malaysia and Sarawak’s First Purpose-Built Multi-Purpose Support Vessel (MPSV), the SKG 520 at IEW 2025

KUCHING – 28 July – Nam Cheong Group, Malaysia’s largest Offshore Support Vessel (OSV) builder and a leading integrated marine solutions provider, announced a significant milestone with the unveiling of the SKG 520, the first Malaysia and Sarawak company-owned purpose-built Multi-Purpose Support Vessel (MPSV).

The state-of-the-art vessel was unveiled and showcased at the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 in Kuching, Sarawak, drawing high-profile attention from key government leaders.

The SKG 520 represents a new era of innovation and adaptability in offshore support, designed to meet the complex and evolving demands of both traditional oil & gas and the burgeoning renewable energy sectors.

Its advanced design incorporates provisions for five distinct, custom-fit-for-purpose configurations, offering great versatility:

  1. Geotech Drilling Rig: For seabed characterization and geotechnical surveys.
  2. Subsea ROV Deployment: Enabling remote underwater operations and inspections.
  3. Air Diving Deployment: Supporting subsea maintenance and construction with air diving capabilities.
  4. Survey Equipment (Streamers and Sonars): For comprehensive marine surveys and data acquisition.
  5. Walk-to-Work Gangway: Providing safe and efficient personnel transfer to offshore installations.

The unveiling of the SKG 520 at IEW 2025 garnered significant attention, including a distinguished visit from Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, the Premier of Sarawak, who personally toured the exhibit.

The Nam Cheong Group also had the honor of a visit by Datuk Dr. Haji Hazland Haji Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESTY), underscoring the strong alignment between Nam Cheong’s strategic vision and Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and its green economy missions.

The innovation behind the SKG 520 is rooted in Nam Cheong’s proven track record of adapting vessels for future energy needs. Its concept is based on the successful retrofit of the SK Eonik, a vessel that has been successfully converted and is currently deployed to Japan for a project under a 2+2-year charter, demonstrating Nam Cheong’s global reach and expertise in supporting offshore wind energy.

“The SKG 520 is a testament to Nam Cheong Group’s unwavering commitment to engineering excellence and our proactive approach in addressing the evolving demands of the global energy landscape,” said Mr. Leong Seng Keat, Group CEO of Nam Cheong Group.

“As Sarawak positions itself as a leader in the green hydrogen economy and offshore renewables, the SKG 520 stands ready as a versatile, purpose-built asset, proudly owned by a Malaysian and Sarawakian company, to support these critical developments both locally and internationally.”

Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Su Kouk, Founder of Nam Cheong Group, added, “From our roots in Sarawak, we have consistently pushed the boundaries of shipbuilding. The SKG 520 embodies our legacy of innovation and adaptability, showcasing the advanced capabilities of our Miri Dockyard and our skilled workforce.

“This vessel is not just a new build; it is a symbol of our dedication to providing integrated marine solutions that are truly future-ready.”

The SKG 520 is scheduled for a formal naming ceremony in August, marking another significant milestone in its operational readiness.
