MAB presents 34 proposals to empower the visually impaired community

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 34 proposals to empower the visually impaired (OKU) community, including needs related to information accessibility, education, job opportunities and the use of technology, have been submitted by the Malaysian Association of the Blind (MAB) for the government’s attention and scrutiny.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the matter was raised in a dialogue session he held with the association on Thursday.
“Alhamdulillah, I was able to attend the session with MAB this afternoon. The meeting took place in a very open atmosphere and full of insightful sharing.

“Many views, experiences and constructive suggestions were highlighted, reflecting MAB’s concern for issues of accessibility, inclusivity and the future of the visually impaired community in this country,” he said in a post on Facebook.

Fahmi said that during the meeting, among the things emphasized was the need for the media to deliver information more comprehensively by taking into account the needs of the visually impaired, especially through the use of more consistent and quality audio elements.

He said the discussion also touched on the great potential of this group in the creative industry which should be explored and empowered through policy support, training and fair opportunities.
“This session opens up an important space for dialogue, thus reminding us that true national development will leave no one behind,” he said.
