adminKUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran stressed that he was not in court during the proceedings involving activist Arun Dorasamy, but instead only had time to meet briefly outside the Jawi Magistrate’s Court Complex in Nibong Tebal.
He said his visit to the court was on his way back from Penang, with the aim of meeting Arun and encouraging him to trust in the legal process as he faced the upcoming proceedings.
“I have known Arun since representing Indira Gandhi in legal challenges regarding the custody of her children.
“I would like to clarify that I only met Arun briefly in the court complex before leaving the premises. I was not in the courtroom when the charges were read out and the proceedings were conducted,” Kulasegaran explained in a statement today.
Arun, 56, pleaded not guilty to charges of making statements on social media with the intention of causing public outrage in March last year.
Earlier, the People’s Justice Party (PKR) Religious Understanding and Strengthening Bureau demanded an explanation from Kulasegaran regarding his presence with Arun at the Jawi Magistrate’s Court.
Its chairman Amidi Abdul Manan in a media statement said the presence of the Ipoh Barat MP, although in a personal capacity, invites various interpretations and could affect public perception of the government since he is a member of the administration.
