JAKARTA: In an effort to support its energy self-sufficiency goal, Indonesia plans to restrict the export of palm oil waste, including used cooking oil, to ensure that the material is prioritized for domestic use.
President Prabowo Subianto said the material will be channeled to support, among others, the production of biodiesel and domestic aviation fuel.
“Palm oil waste, used cooking oil, can be used as raw material for aviation fuel. Therefore, with apologies to other countries, I will stop such exports.
“I prohibit the export of waste palm oil and used cooking oil. It must first meet the interests of the Indonesian people,” he said in a speech during the National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) of the central and provincial governments in Sentul, Bogor District, West Java, on Monday.
The video of his speech was shared on social media.
Prabowo said efforts to expand palm oil-based energy development would help reduce Indonesia’s dependence on energy imports. He added that Indonesia aims not only to achieve biodiesel self-sufficiency but also to become among the world’s largest producers of aviation fuel.
