KOTA BHARU: The decision by Larut Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, to step down as Opposition Leader was made to ensure a more harmonious atmosphere and strengthen the journey of the Perikatan Nasional (PN).
The matter was revealed by PN Secretary-General, Takiyuddin Hassan, who informed that the reason was stated in the resignation letter sent to PN Chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar on Sunday.
According to him, Hamzah’s action was aimed at creating a better atmosphere within the country’s main opposition coalition.
“Yesterday we received a letter. The PN chairman received a letter from Hamzah who had vacated the position of Opposition Leader on the grounds that he wanted to see a better atmosphere.
“In the letter, he also hoped that his action would facilitate the process within PN, thus ensuring smooth administration and harmony within the country’s main opposition coalition,” he told reporters when met at the Kota Bharu Parliament and Bunut Payong State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Aidilfitri Open House here on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Takiyuddin said that PN will send a letter of notification regarding the vacancy of the opposition leader position to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat in the near future.
“I will write a letter to the Speaker stating that the position of Leader of the Opposition is vacant.
“It will be filled when we (PN) have candidates to present later,” he said.
Takiyuddin, who is also the PAS Secretary-General, said that on Saturday, the PN Chairman received a letter from Hamzah informing him of the resignation of the Opposition Leader.
He said that PAS already has a suitable candidate to replace Hamzah.
“The matter is in the discussion stage and has not been decided yet,” he said.
Sinar Harian on Sunday reported that the riddle regarding the status of the Opposition Leader position was finally answered when Ahmad Samsuri confirmed that Hamzah was no longer the holder of the position.
Following this, he said, Takiyuddin was instructed to send an official letter informing the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat of the vacancy.
