KUALA LUMPUR: The government is committed to continuing to gazette green and open areas in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur on a monthly basis to ensure that more public spaces are protected for the people’s use.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the move was implemented through a fast track approach by the Special Task Force on the Gazettement of Open and Green Areas, which was established to speed up the process.
“There are still many more areas, currently Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is working hard together with the Director of Land and Mines to increase gazettement every month. This is our focus and priority.”
“This effort will continue every month with more areas being identified to be gazetted from time to time,” he said at a press conference on the addition of green and open areas that have been gazetted in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud, Federal Territories Land and Mines Director Datin Rahilah Rahmat, Federal Territories Department (JWP) Director-General Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain and Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok.
Hannah also announced the gazetting of 45 more green and open areas covering an area of 277,663.90 square metres, bringing the total number of areas that have been gazetted to 539 locations so far.
“This area is now locked as the people’s property through the continuous efforts of the Special Task Force for the Gazettement of Open and Green Areas under the JWP.”
“This gazettement means that these areas can no longer be arbitrarily converted to other purposes and will remain as public spaces for the use of the community, families and future generations,” he said.
Hannah said the move was also part of a long-term strategy to make Kuala Lumpur a more sustainable and resilient city, including adopting the “Sponge City” concept in addressing flooding issues and rising urban temperatures.
He said the public can check the full list of gazetted areas through the official portal of the Office of the Director of Land and Mines of the Federal Territories, https://www.ptgwp.gov.my/portal .
Meanwhile, he said the Special Task Force on the Gazettement of Open and Green Areas would be led by Muhammad Azmi and involve various key agencies including the Federal Territories Land and Mines Department as well as related technical agencies, with meetings held regularly every month.
