EC expands implementation of OCR-VA system pilot project in Melaka PRN

MELAKA: The Election Commission (EC) will expand the implementation of the pilot project of the Optical Character Recognition Voter Attendance System (OCR-VA) in the Melaka State Election (PRN).

EC Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the system would be used in all channels at every polling centre involving the 28 Melaka State Constituencies.

“The OCR-VA system (is used) to automatically record and mark voter attendance by scanning information on identification documents, thus speeding up the process of checking and recording attendance, reducing manual marking errors and increasing the efficiency of staff and processes on polling day.

“The EC emphasises that the implementation of the OCR-VA pilot project is also part of efforts to digitalise the election process without changing the existing voting procedures,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after chairing a special meeting to discuss matters and important dates for the Melaka state election here today.

Ramlan said that through the system, voters only need to attend the polling centre as usual, present their identification documents to the officers for verification and then continue the voting process according to existing procedures.

Meanwhile, he said the EC would continue to broadcast live election processes through live streaming of selected voting centres or channels on the EC’s official Facebook page as implemented in previous elections, including unofficial results after voting hours have ended.

He said the EC would also implement the “Jom Kita Undi” campaign through various media channels to encourage voters to come out and fulfill their responsibilities.

The Melaka PRN will be held on Nov 14 with early voting on Nov 10 and nomination of candidates on Oct 31.
