DAP will decide on its position in the Government on August 16 – Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP will determine its position in the government during the party’s National Conference scheduled to be held on August 16, said its Secretary-General, Anthony Loke.

He said a motion regarding the matter would be presented to delegates before being decided by the nearly 4,000 delegates who were eligible to attend the conference.

“The decision was not made by the Central Executive Committee (CEC) members… we leave it to the discretion of the delegates to make the decision.”

“Either DAP should remain in government until the end of this period or otherwise,” he said during a press conference after attending the CEC meeting here today.

Anthony also said the conference would determine the future direction of DAP in the national political arena.

According to him, any decision on whether the party will remain in government or be outside the administration must be made collectively by the delegates.

“The party’s direction must be decided collectively by the party delegates. We will be guided by their decisions after August 16.”

“At that time, it will be clearer whether they want us to remain in the government and continue to fight from within, or to be outside the government,” he added.

In February, Anthony reportedly said DAP would hold a conference to allow delegates to decide on the issue.

According to him, DAP will at the same time continue to maintain support for the Unity Government in Parliament, besides describing the process as an “internal referendum” within the party.

The congress was originally scheduled to take place on July 12, but was postponed to August 16 following the dissolution of the Johor and Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assemblies (DUNs) to focus on the State Elections (PRN)..
