KUCHING, Oct 23 (Bernama) — Artificial intelligence (AI) can never match human wisdom and emotional intelligence when it comes to preserving cultural heritage and fostering global peace, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He stressed that while rapid technological advancements provide essential data for problem-solving, human intelligence remains the primary driver behind meaningful solutions and cultural continuity.
“Even though there is scientific innovation coming on through AI, you cannot match artificial neuro-intelligence with human neuro-intelligence. AI has no wisdom, but we have the wisdom.
“Though you need the data for you to find the solutions, but the human brain is still the best if you compare with the artificial brain,” he said in his keynote address at the 22nd International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) General Assembly and Scientific Symposium 2026 Gala Dinner here tonight.
Abang Johari said human-led heritage protection, grounded in shared values, is crucial to building a peaceful world.
He noted that safeguarding living heritage requires combining traditional knowledge with human wisdom, an ethos reflected in Sarawak’s own commitment to social inclusivity and environmental sustainability under its Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
The gala dinner marked the conclusion of the week-long ICOMOS General Assembly 2026, which gathered 1,800 delegates from 110 countries and saw the adoption of the historic Kuching Declaration on safeguarding living heritage.
Organised by ICOMOS Malaysia in collaboration with ICOMOS International, the assembly marked Southeast Asia’s first time hosting the prestigious global gathering.
