Abang Johari given full mandate to determine GPS candidate – Uggah

KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been given a full mandate to determine the coalition’s candidate for the 13th State Election (PRN13).

The deputy president of the United Bumiputera Party (PBB), who is also the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said the agreement was reached by all GPS component parties in the previous coalition meeting.

“Everyone agrees and supports giving Abang Johari the mandate to make the final decision in the selection of candidates,” he said after attending the PBB Supreme Working Council (MKT) meeting today.

On Oct 23, Abang Johari, who is also the Premier of Sarawak, announced that the Sarawak State Assembly would be dissolved effective Oct 26 to make way for the 13th general election.

The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting on Nov 6 to discuss important dates and matters related to the general election.

GPS is made up of four component parties, namely PBB, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Sarawak People’s Party (PRS) and the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

Meanwhile, Uggah, when commenting on the possibility of the 13th general election being held during the Northeast Monsoon, said the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) would liaise with the EC for monitoring and coordination purposes based on the latest weather forecast developments.

“We ourselves do not yet know when the elections will be held, but we have been informed that the monsoon season has started until March next year,” he said.
