Ahmad Zahid denies government wants to postpone PRN due to fear of losing

DUNGUN: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has slammed Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s claim that the Unity Government is planning to postpone the Melaka and Johor State Elections (PRN) because it is afraid of losing the elections.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also UMNO President, said Muhyiddin should not assume that the government would take action to postpone the election as the former prime minister had done when he led the country’s administration before.

“So, don’t do what he (Muhyiddin) does, he thinks others will do the same,” he said after opening the MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Dungun here today.

He was commenting on Muhyiddin’s statement which was reported as saying that the proposal to postpone the general election was driven by fear of losing the people’s support.

Previously, Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong was reported to have proposed postponing the election because he wanted to reduce the burden on the people who were facing rising living costs due to the global energy crisis.

Ahmad Zahid said there was no question of postponing the state elections in the two states because the decision to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) was the absolute right of the state government.

“This (PRN) is up to His Excellency (TYT), His Royal Highness the Regent Sultan of Johor and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong himself because the right to dissolve the DUN rests with them,” he said.
