KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is ready to give its full commitment to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into the issue of electronic waste (e-waste) management.
The minister concerned, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the ministry had taken note of the report of the arrest of two senior Department of Environment officers by the MACC and stressed that NRES would not tolerate any form of abuse of power, malpractice or corrupt practices involving any staff under the ministry.
“I have instructed the Ministry’s Secretary-General (Datuk Dr Ching Thoo Kim) to ensure that all functions and daily operations of the DOE run as usual without any disruption to ensure that services to the people and environmental monitoring remain a priority,” he said in a statement today.
Arthur also asked all parties not to make any speculation that could affect the authorities’ investigation and NRES would continue to monitor developments in the case from time to time.
“NRES will take follow-up action at the internal level in accordance with the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations if necessary,” he said.
Earlier, the media reported that the MACC had detained the Director General and Deputy Director General of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for investigation into allegations of abuse of power and corruption related to e-waste management which is believed to have occurred in recent years.
