KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,363 citizenship applications are still in the consideration process for the period from January 1, 2024 to September 30, said Deputy Home Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.
He said that during the same period, a total of 16,338 citizenship applications were received, while 4,583 applications were approved with citizenship certificates issued to the applicants.
“Each application will be thoroughly examined and considered based on the facts of the case, information, documents and supporting evidence submitted by the applicant in the appropriate order before a decision is made.”
“This process requires detailed scrutiny and there is no specific period set for the issuance of any decision,” he said when answering a question from Tan Kar Hing (PH-Gopeng) on the status of citizenship and entry permit applications during the Special Chamber session in the Dewan Rakyat, today.
Regarding applications for citizenship through naturalization, Shamsul Anuar said that the facility under Article 19(1) of the Federal Constitution could be considered for certain categories, including adult individuals born abroad to Malaysian citizen mothers.
He said the facility could be considered for individuals aged 21 and above who previously did not have the opportunity to obtain Malaysian citizenship and faced difficulties in meeting residency requirements, subject to the criteria and conditions set.
Among the application requirements are that the applicant must have resided in the Federation for at least 10 years within the 12 years prior to the application, including the last 12 months. The applicant must also intend to reside permanently in Malaysia, be of good conduct and have sufficient knowledge of the Malay language.
Applicants in this category must also obtain a Temporary Resident Identification Card (MyKAS) and hold it for at least six months before submitting an application.
