YouTube introduces trusted health information search labels
LOS ANGELES: In an effort to curb inaccurate information and sources, the YouTube platform will label videos related to reliable health information beginning in early 2023.
Reported international news agency, YouTube Health Global Manager and Head , Garth Graham in an announcement on Tuesday informed that the new format of the use of labels will make it easier for users to classify the original source of videos related to health searches.
Meanwhile, Germany became the first country to introduce YouTube Health.
“Trustworthy sources” on health-related topics are important for YouTube , which now has more than 2 billion users worldwide,” said Graham.
Earlier, YouTube received criticism for giving space to unaccredited sources presenting dubious and unauthentic health information.
In mid-2020, the European Commission warned about the dissemination of false information on YouTube in a campaign to combat pandemic-related misinformation.
Content from channels with a health label will be prioritized when users search for related topics. At the same time, this effort allows the channel to reach the targeted number of views.
Meanwhile, bodies that can apply for the label include health institutions, educational institutions, health departments, government organizations and medical journals for entry starting on October 27.
For the selection of reliable sources of health information, YouTube refers to the content criteria confirmed by the non-governmental organizations of the American Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the World Health Organization.
