Woman loses more than RM50,000 deceived by online job offers
KUANTAN: A woman’s desire to increase her income through part-time work was not fulfilled when she was deceived by an online job offer and claimed to have lost RM53,875.
Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the 41-year-old victim claimed to have been contacted via the WhatsApp application on January 29 regarding a job offer to subscribe and like on YouTube.
“The victim claimed to have been promised a commission of 30 percent for each task performed. For the first task, the victim was instructed to make a payment of RM300 before she received a refund amounting to RM390 which was deposited into her bank account.
“The amount of profit caused the victim to be interested in continuing to make payments to the point of withdrawing savings and borrowing from family members which totaled RM53,875,” he said in a statement today.
Ramli said the woman realized she had been cheated after not receiving a refund despite having made online payments to four accounts through 10 transactions and made a report at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters yesterday.
In this regard, he advised the public not to be easily deceived by job offers through social media, especially those that promise lucrative returns.
He said the public is also reminded to check the account number received at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/ before making any transaction to avoid being cheated.
