Vietnam will release Apple Watch, Macbook for the first time

HANOI: Apple is in talks to make Apple Watches and MacBooks in Vietnam for the first time as the US tech giant seeks to diversify its production outside of China, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, citing Nikkei Asia.

Apple supplier Luxshare Precision Industry and Foxconn have begun trial production of the Apple Watch in northern Vietnam with the aim of manufacturing the device outside of China.

Regarding MacBook production, Apple has asked the supplier factory to make a trial production in Vietnam. However, progress in moving mass production to the country has been slow, partly due to pandemic-related disruptions.

Vietnam is already the most important production hub for Apple outside of China, producing various flagship products for the American company, including iPad tablets and AirPods earphones.

Apple also continued to transfer iPad production to Vietnam in an effort to diversify its production. In addition, the group is also in talks with suppliers to make trial production of its HomePod smart speaker in Vietnam.

The number of Apple suppliers with facilities in the Southeast Asian country has risen to at least 22 companies from 14 in 2018, according to a Nikkei Asia analysis of Apple’s latest list of available suppliers.

Many other major electronics manufacturers such as Google, Dell and Amazon are also moving their production to the country to diversify its production outside of China.
