Vacation in peace without any tax arrears and travel restrictions
16 FEBRUARY 2023 was the last day of school for the students for the 2022 session before they had a long ‘rest’ and started school on 20 March 2023. Vacation planning must have been made by parents to ensure that their school holidays this year are more meaningful. To ensure a calm and peaceful holiday, the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (HASiL) would like to advise all taxpayers to check their tax arrears status and travel restrictions before making plans to go abroad for any purpose.
Taxpayers can check the status of their tax arrears through the MyTax portal which can be accessed via the link https://mytax.hasil.gov.my/ . While travel restrictions can be checked on the website of the Malaysian Immigration Department at https://sspi.imi.gov.my/sspi/ .
Referring to Sections 104 and 75A of the Income Tax Act 1967 (ACP 1967), and Section 22 of the Real Estate Gains Tax Act 1976 (ACKHT 1976), HASiL is empowered to prevent any individual from leaving Malaysia if they or their company has tax arrears which is not explained to the government. Notification of the action will be made to the last address updated by the taxpayer to HASiL through the latest recorded taxation data.
If taxpayers have tax arrears and are subject to travel restrictions, they are requested to make a payment or contact the HASiL office that handles their tax file for the purpose of negotiating installment payments to enable them to continue traveling abroad.
For the purpose of paying income tax arrears, tax payments can be made through: * MyTax Portal through the ezHasil Service > ByrHASiL or direct link https://byrhasil.hasil.gov.my/ ; or * Internet banking portal of commercial banks appointed as HASiL collection agents; or * Cash deposit machine/ Automatic teller machine (ATM) bank collection agent HASiL; or * Selected HASiL collection agent bank counter; or * HASiL Payment Counters in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak using credit cards / debit cards.
