UK fines TikTok US$16 million for registering children under the age of 13

MOSCOW: The United Kingdom (UK) information regulator has fined TikTok GBP12.7 million (nearly US$16 million) for violating data protection laws, including allowing children under the age of 13 to use its social media platform and processing data them without parental consent.

“The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) imposed a fine of GBP12,700,000 on TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited and TikTok Inc (TikTok) for a number of breaches of data protection laws.

“The ICO estimates that TikTok allowed up to 1.4 million UK children under 13 to use its platform in 2020 despite its own rules not allowing children of that age to open accounts,” according to the statement, Sputnik reported.

UK data protection law requires organizations to obtain the consent of their parents or other legal representatives to use the personal data of children under the age of 13.

However, TikTok failed to do so, instead the platform allegedly collected and processed children’s personal data allowing potentially harmful content to be channeled to them.

Over the past few months, more than half of the states in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have banned TikTok from being installed on government devices due to concerns about the security of user data that can be accessed by the Chinese government.
