Twitter to remove ‘legacy’ verified badges in April

Only paying subscribers will be granted blue checkmarks and businesses will be charged US$1,000/month for verified status

Subscribers will receive the ability to edit Tweets, upload 1080p videos, access readers, receive custom navigation and more.

TWITTER’S previous blue check-mark verification system will soon be history.

The social network, which Elon Musk purchased last year in a US$44 billion (about RM194.8 billion) debt-laden deal, stated that effective April 1, it will remove the verified check-mark status of accounts that were confirmed as significant before the takeover unless currently subscribed.

Individual Twitter users will only receive verified blue checkmarks if they pay for Twitter Blue, which costs US$8/month through the web and US$11/month via in-app purchase on iOS and Android in the United States.

Twitter Blue was made accessible globally earlier this week, the company revealed.

Twitter recently added a gold checkmark for businesses and brands, while government accounts now use a grey checkmark.

As previously stated, a membership to the social network’s new Twitter Verified Organizations programme in the United States would cost $1,000 per month (plus tax) and $50 per month (plus tax) for each subsequent affiliate subaccount.

Twitter originally launched verified accounts in 2009 to assist users in determining if celebrities, politicians, firms and brands, news organisations, and other “of public interest” accounts were authentic and not imposter or parody accounts.

The post now has more than 4 million views, and a slew of comments. “Imagine paying for twitter never,” one user wrote under the post.

“So, after EVERYTHING WE HAD TO DO TO BE ACTUALLY VERIFIED ALL THE SUBMISSIONS ALL THE REJECTIONS ALL THE PRESS…YALL JUST READY FOR TWITTER TO NOT MEAN ANYTHING,” another person wrote.

Others thought it might just be an April fool’s joke.

“April Fool’s, amirite?”

Subscribers will receive the ability to edit Tweets, upload 1080p videos, access readers, receive custom navigation and more.

“Far too many corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ checkmarks exist, so no choice but to remove legacy Blue in coming months,” Musk tweeted in November.

Musk stated in his first companywide message to Twitter employees last year that subscription services will need to account for half of the company’s income.

“Without significant subscription revenue, there is a good chance Twitter will not survive the upcoming economic downturn,” he wrote.
