Transgender arrested for trying to insult the Queen of Thailand

BANGKOK: An activist was arrested by the authorities after being accused of trying to insult the Thai royal family.

Citing a BBC report , Jatuporn ‘New’ Saeoueng wore a silk shirt as if making fun of Queen Suthida while participating in a street protest.

The 25-year-old transgender is one of hundreds of activists accused of insulting the Thai Royal family in protests calling for reforms to the monarchy.

According to AP Jatuporn denied making fun of Queen Suthida and did not intend to cause provocation that day.

“I styled the dress for myself, my version is wearing traditional Thai clothes,” he said.

Jatuporn joined the protest held in the city of Bangkok in 2020 wearing a pink traditional Thai dress while being supported by an assistant.

In Thailand, it is an offense to insult the King, Queen, heir or Regent.

A maximum sentence of 15 years in prison can be imposed under the world’s strictest ‘lese majeste’ law.
