Tourist arrivals in Thailand reached 11.5 million

Thailand, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, was visited by nearly 40 million visitors in 2019.

BANGKOK: Thailand has so far reached its target in terms of tourist arrivals in 2022 when more than 11.5 million foreign visitors visited the country.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the tourism sector is projected to generate revenue of 1.5 trillion baht (100 baht = RM12.76) or at 50 percent of the post-pandemic level in 2019.

“The re-arrival of foreign tourists and the recovery of domestic tourism since the end of the long holiday and the tourism stimulus campaign have helped (reach the tourist arrival target),” he said in a statement.

Yuthasak said TAT also expects 3.14 million domestic trips during the New Year between December to Jan 2 which is expected to generate 11.2 billion baht in revenue.

Thailand, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, was visited by almost 40 million visitors in 2019.

However, the tourism industry almost collapsed due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced Thailand to introduce strict entry requirements and high costs.

For 2023, Thailand is set to welcome at least 20 million tourists and is expected to generate an income of 2.38 trillion baht (US$64.5 billion).

Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said the number of tourist arrivals will increase with the return of tourists from China.

Meanwhile, TAT announced that it will organize the New Year celebration “Amazing Thailand Countdown 2023” in Bangkok and Songkhla as well as in several other regions.
