This is the Miss Universe Malaysia national costume inspired by Mount Kinabalu!
MISS Universe Malaysia, Lesley Cheam will wear a dress inspired by the highest mountain in Malaysia, Mount Kinabalu for the Miss Universe pageant scheduled to take place in the United States in January 2023.
The metallic colored costume is the interpretation of fashion designer Hatta Dolmat which is also embellished with jemeki stone details.
It symbolizes the granite rock that does not blend into the formation of Mount Kinabalu and the colors used also symbolize strength and confidence!
Weighing more than 10 kilograms, the costume that highlights the nature’s sustainability features uses used fabric from including polyethylene terephythalate (PET) which is usually used to produce plastic bottles and food packaging.
According to the National Director of Miss Universe Malaysia Organization (MUMO), Elaine Daly, the costume conveys a progressive message to the global community.
“This national costume is one of the highlights in this beauty pageant. At MUMO we always go all out every year including this time.
“We promote recycled fashion in an effort to help global warming which is getting out of control.
“At the same time, we also present the majesty of Malaysia which is Mount Kinabalu to present to the world,” she said.
It is understood that Hatta previously presented several other designs inspired by Wau Bulan and Wayang Kulit.
But the Miss Universe Malaysia organization unanimously chose the costume inspired by Mount Kinabalu.
In addition, the event also announced a nebula-inspired evening gown.
