The music act will be created within two years – Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said a comprehensive act for the music industry will be established within two years.

Speaking to reporters after the monthly gathering of the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) here today, he said since the act for the music industry is not yet in place, the matter needs to be examined including the aspects of regulating the industry and marketing.

“We expect the process of enacting an act to take time, but there is an effort to accompany, help and provide some policies that are suitable and beneficial and meet the needs of the music industry,” he said.

Fahmi said KKD agreed to create an effort to enact a music act after getting the views of various parties, including industry activists.

He said in the MyCreative Ventures public dialogue session with music industry activists previously, one of the issues raised was the effort to bring local creative products to the international level.

Answering a question, Fahmi said the act does not involve the royalties of music artists because the issue is overseen by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.

“We are still in the early stages, so it is difficult for me to say what it will look like later, but we have accepted suggestions from several parties, for example creating a body that can control the music industry,” he said.

He said there are those who think the focus for a body that can regulate or help the music industry is towards honing talent, helping the marketing aspect and ensuring the sustainable growth of the ecosystem.

Fahmi also said that as of 2022, MyCreative has successfully developed over 10,000 individuals and creative businesses and supported over 30,000 jobs in the creative industry through a fund channel of RM447.7 million and loans amounting to RM558.45 million have been approved.

He said since its inception until now, MyCreative has uplifted various art forms and creative activists through strategic and innovative investments and the provision of a dynamic platform.

At the event, Fahmi presented a Digital Content Fund (DKD) of up to RM50,000 to 10 individuals who created National Day and Malaysia Day themed songs or patriotic songs with a national theme in various types of music and genres.

They were shortlisted from a total of 53 applications received after going through a rigorous screening process.
