The ministry needs a few weeks to carefully monitor the implementation of 5G – Fahmi Fadzil
PUTRAJAYA: The Communications and Digital Ministry needs a few weeks to discuss the implementation of 5G technology services in Malaysia involving Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB).
His minister, Fahmi Fadzil, said that his party will hold a meeting with the Ministry of Finance (MoF) next Monday and he hopes that the information from the meeting can be brought to the Cabinet meeting as soon as possible.
According to him, in the meeting on Wednesday morning, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also touched on the issue, especially from the aspect of technical evaluation to ensure that the implementation is not interrupted.
“This is what the Prime Minister stated in the Cabinet Meeting this morning that the MoF and the Ministry of Communications, we need to conduct a technical assessment and examine several aspects to ensure the implementation of the 5G network is not disrupted.
“We don’t want to be disturbed, if possible we want to speed it up. We see many other countries, the level of implementation, maybe some have already finished and some countries are even starting to talk about 6G.
“At the same time, we know there are some issues related to the company (DNB). That’s why the Prime Minister ordered us to look into this matter,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after the Post-Cabinet Meeting of the Ministry of Communications and Digital here on Wednesday.
In the meantime, Fahmi insisted that the project had not been suspended, rather the ministry would examine the companies involved in the implementation of the technology.
“As of October 31, 2022, DNB continues the development of 5G infrastructure with a total of 2,715 5G sites completed covering 36 percent coverage in populated areas,” he said.
He also said that the ministry is taking the matter seriously, not only from the technical aspect but also the law to ensure that the service can be implemented immediately.
