‘The Meaning of a Raya Shirt’ – #Raya Shirt Project helps the less able

KUALA LUMPUR: A piece of baju raya means enough for those who are less able to celebrate Lebaran which will be celebrated on Saturday (yesterday).

In order to give smiles and share joy on Eid, various parties came forward to ease the burden, especially the B40 group and the urban poor.

Among the efforts that were put in place was the #Baju Raya Project by the Karangkraf Media Group, and was implemented right at the beginning of the last fast.

Through the initiative, as many as 500 kilograms (kg) of clothes were successfully collected as a result of public donations.

According to Sinar Karangkraf Group’s Head of Marketing and Branding, Nik Justin Nik Mohd Ariffin, the amount is expected to benefit more than 20,000 beneficiaries from various disadvantaged groups.

“The main objective is to ease the burden of Malaysians who are currently affected by the uncertain economic situation.

“This is a corporate initiative and for this year we (Sinar Karangkraf) are adding a new campaign which is #Projek Baju Raya,” he said when met by Astro AWANI at Medan Tuanku Homeless Service Center, here recently.

Commenting further, Nik Jastin said his party has made a screening process to ensure the clothes distributed are of good quality.

“Actually, I was a little emotional because the response was very encouraging.

“We didn’t expect the response but you can see for yourself, they were very excited and queued for almost half an hour to wait for their turn to get baju raya.

“Indeed, the Raya shirts that are collected, we do a screening process and choose the best,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Vice-President of the Malaysian Islamic Women’s Action Association (Pertiwi), Datuk Munirah Abdul Hamid said that in addition to the cooperation in distributing raya clothes, his party also held a program to cut hair, including for the homeless.

“Because we must care for each other and don’t think that we are the only ones who prepare with new clothes (on Eid).

“You have to look at other people too and at those who can’t afford to buy new clothes, and when I hear that new clothes are being given away, I’m so happy,” she said.

At the same time, Munirah hopes that the welfare of the children of the B40 group and the poor in terms of education, will be more guaranteed in the future and given more focus.
