The ‘Light of Ramadan’ at London’s Piccadilly Circus
LONDON: For the first time, Piccadilly Circus in London, United Kingdom was illuminated with decorative lights to mark the arrival of the month of Ramadan.
The lights were turned on in Coventry Street (between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square) to celebrate the welcome of Ramadan until next April 21.
Around 30,000 lights were used to form the 61 moon decorations, with more energy efficient LED lights also used.
The decorations were brought by Ramadan Lights UK, a non-profit organization that aims to spread awareness about the month of Ramadan.
“This carefully curated concept depicts the phases of Ramadan, bringing the light of Ramadan to the streets of London,” said Ramadan Lights UK in an Instagram post.
The initiative, led by founder Aisha Desai, started three years ago.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said it was an honor to “turn on these lights”.
“London is now the first major city in Europe to display its lights in celebration of Ramadan. It is a true symbol of how London celebrates the diversity of its population,” he said on Twitter.
