The government will set up a special committee to look into musician royalties

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Communications and Digital will look into the issue of royalty payments to musicians in the country, including the family of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

Its minister, Ahmad Fahmi Fadzil said, a special committee will be established in the near future to examine the matter.

“The government will establish a special committee to examine the issue of royalty payments to musicians in the country, including the heirs of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee. The matter will also be examined together with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

“This issue not only affects the heirs of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s family but also other musicians.

“I will have a meeting with the KPDN Minister next week to form a committee to examine aspects of royalty payments and the development of the music industry,” he said.

He said this during the post-Cabinet meeting press conference at his ministry on Friday.

Previously, the KPDN stated that it would take a comprehensive look at the problems plaguing the concerned group.
The matter also covers aspects of copyright through the establishment of an action committee.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said that the effort was raised through the Daya Kreatif: Townhall Pengkarya (Recorded Music Activists) program organized by the music arts activist, Langkah Baru, which was attended by more than 80 art activists in Putrajaya.

In addition, the committee is said to also involve industry activists including composers, singers and recording companies.
