The government supports Kampung Laut Masjid being announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – PM

TUMPAT: The Federal Government fully supports the move to gazette the Kampung Laut Mosque here, which is over 400 years old, as a National Monument under the National Heritage Department and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, the Kampung Laut Mosque will become a valuable historical heritage.

“The uniqueness of this Kampung Laut Mosque lies in the fact that the entire construction is made of cengal wood and without using any nails, in addition to the delicacy of its carvings which is the main attraction for tourists.

“Efforts to get Kampung Laut Old Mosque recognized as a National Heritage Monument and World Heritage Site by UNESCO, will certainly be able to preserve and raise the profile of the historical and cultural heritage of the state of Kelantan, which is very welcome.

“The Federal Government fully supports the move to gazette the Kampung Laut Mosque as a National Monument under the National Heritage Department and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it is very significant,” he said.

The Prime Minister said this while speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Kampung Laut Heritage Site, today.

Also present were the Chief Minister of Kelantan, Datuk Ahmad Yakob, the Chief Minister of Terengganu, Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, the Chief Minister of Pahang, Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and the Chief Minister of Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Ismail Sabri also congratulated the East Coast Economic Regional Council (ECERDC) for successfully moving the Kampung Laut Old Mosque, which is one of the oldest wooden mosques in Southeast Asia, to its original location in Kampung Laut.

He said the history of the Kampung Laut Mosque is closely related to the spread of preaching in the region in the 18th century as well as being a symbol of the glory of Islam in the state of Serambi Mecca.

In addition, Ismail Sabri said the uniqueness of this Kampung Laut Mosque lies in the fact that the entire construction is made of cengal wood and without using any nails, in addition to the delicacy of its carvings which are the main attraction for tourists.

He also said that the Federal Government had spent RM40 million on the Kampung Laut redevelopment project consisting of the Serunding Heritage Site, the Art Heritage Site and the relocation of the Kampung Laut Old Mosque.
