The Gawai Dayak Open House showcases the uniqueness of the Iban people – STF
KUCHING: The Sarawak Tourism Association (STF) will organize the Gawai Dayak Open House on June 9 to 11 at Rumah Panjang Matop in Betong.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said Rumah Matop was chosen because it still maintains the original structure that uses belian wood and was built in 1941.
“During the event, guests will be given a traditional welcome by the local community led by Tuai Rumah Anyie Rajit, about the history of Rumah Matop.
“This is followed by a Miring traditional ceremony, as well as a ngajat dance performance. Visitors can also taste traditional Iban food and drinks, including tuak, pansuh chicken, glutinous rice, barbecued meat and more,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
According to Gerald, there was also a Gawai parade in Betong town with the local community, an exhibition of handicrafts and the art of the local people.
Meanwhile, STF President Audry Wan Ullok said the purpose of the open house was to promote cultural diversity in addition to showcasing Sarawak’s unique traditions and customs.
“This year is the second open house event, after the first event in Taee village, which is a Bidayuh village,” he said.
