The first Batman comic sells for US$1.74 million
WASHINGTON: An old copy that saw the Batman character appear for the first time in a comic published in 1939 was auctioned with a record bid of US $ 1.74 million (RM7.64 million).
Detective Comic No. 27, which features The Batman’s unique adventures on its front page, is a response to the superhero character Superman appearing in Action Comic No. 1 published 11 months earlier, according to auction agency, Goldin Auctions.
Six pages only. That’s enough to see Batman’s superhero character grow into a folklore legend and be able to be paired with the cultural entertainers who founded American art, revolving around Wayne Manor, United Press International (UPI) reported citing the agency’s statement.
The copy is one of 36 samples obtained from the Golden Age comics and only the other six copies have a higher grade of 6.5.
For fans and collectors of comic collections, the item is considered a sacred copy in the comics category and became the first edition to launch a Batman character as well as being a source of craze for the superhero, Goldin Auctions Founder and Executive Chairman Ken Golden told CNN.
Since the edition was published, Batman has evolved into more than just a cartoon character. It has really evolved into a symbol of people’s hope and the reason why collectors want to have it.
According to UPI, the sale took place at the auction session of items including a vehicle once owned by the late leading rapper, Tupac Shakur, a shirt once worn by artist Prince and a 1966 driving license card signed by singer Jim Morrison.
