The establishment of a National Scam Response Center enhances cyber security measures
KUALA LUMPUR: The establishment of the National Scam Response Center as announced in the 2023 Budget will strategically enhance the country’s efforts to combat cybercrime, according to a cyber security organization.
Trend Micro Malaysia and Nascent Countries Managing Director Goh Chee Hoh said the targeted cyber security measures outlined will not only improve the country’s cyber security but also increase the confidence of stakeholders and end users.
“We welcome the establishment of the National Scam Response Center, in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the National Financial Crime Prevention Center (NFCC) and financial institutions.
“The establishment of the center is of course in good synergy with the proposed allocation of RM73 million to CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) to strengthen the country’s cyber security resilience by improving the ability to monitor, detect and report cyber crimes,” he said in a statement.
Goh said he believed the government would remain steadfast in strengthening the country’s data security stance by continuing to improve existing legal provisions to protect the country from new or increased cyber risks by cyber criminals.
“Apart from creating the necessary infrastructure, investments and proactive and effective cyber security measures also need to be seen to ensure business continuity,” he said.
Microsoft Malaysia Managing Director K Raman said the budget allocated to CSM needs to be highlighted as cyber security is a key consideration that can impact the country’s resilience in the digital economy.
He said as a company that puts trust at the core in all aspects, having a secure digital landscape is important for future endeavors.
“Therefore, Microsoft is exploring collaboration with the government especially in cyber security strategies to improve the country’s digital resilience.
“We are supporting the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) in areas related to capacity building, providing views and capabilities of the private sector as well as best practices on policies and regulations to make Malaysia a destination of choice for digital investment,” he said.
