The death of Queen Elizabeth II left a great legacy to be borne by King Charles III – Hamidin
KUALA LUMPUR: The death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday after more than 70 years as the ruling monarch of the United Kingdom (UK) left a great legacy for her heir, King Charles III to carry on after assuming the throne.
According to Ilham Centre’s Research Fellow, Associate Professor Hamidin Abd Hamid, this is more than seeing the contribution and efforts of Queen Elizabeth II who successfully brought the British royal family into a new era and was respected by the people.
“One of the greatest legacies left by Queen Elizabeth II is how she does not interfere, (in fact) respects all people’s decisions.
“If we look at his last job when the Conservative party chose Liz Truss as Prime Minister and he (agreed) to accept that decision and to be admitted two days before his death,” explained Hamidin when interviewed by Astro AWANI on Friday.
He added that Queen Elizabeth II has also become a symbol respected by the people of the UK, even in this modern age.
“This shows that if respect is given to the doctrine of separation of powers between the monarchy and the constitution, I think it makes a stable situation in the political context of a country.
“This is what the late Queen Elizabeth showed, she became a symbol for the country and respecting this symbol makes a mature society for a country,” he said.
Commenting further on the British royal family, Hamidin explained, various episodes also disrupted the stability of the family’s rule, but were successfully resolved by Queen Elizabeth II.
“One of the great contributions of Queen Elizabeth II is that she managed to bring the British royal family into a new era, as a modern monarchy especially against the background of society and palace traditions that are very conservative in Britain.
“We see one of the big challenges is when there are many episodes that undermine the stability and continuity of the English royal family, especially after the episode of arguments and the divorce of Prince Charles (at that time) and Princess Diana.
“But His Majesty managed to solve the problem, when Diana’s death he managed to bring it out and make the palace closer to the people even though at that time the situation was a little threatened due to the popularity of the late Princess Diana,” he added.
Earlier today the media reported, Queen Elizabeth II, the longest ruler in the history of the modern world, breathed her last at noon on Thursday (local time).
Her Majesty died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
At the same time as the announcement, the flag in the United Kingdom (UK) was flown at half-mast, while all television and radio broadcast schedules were updated, in honor of her death.
