The co-author claims Mariah Carey ‘dreamed’ to wrote the song All I Want For Christmas Is You

Afanasieff claimed that Carey actually had no musical knowledge.

TOP STAR Mariah Carey has previously talked about how she wrote her hit song All I Want For Christmas Is You using her Casio keyboard when she was a child, but her producer and co-writer claim otherwise.

In fact, he boldly claimed Carey “doesn’t understand music”.

Walter Afanasieff made the revelation on the Hot Takes & Deep Dives with Jess Rothschild podcast , where he revealed how he and Carey, 52, came up with the song after collaborating on the album Music Box.

Afanasieff said they both knew the origin of the song but were surprised when there was ‘another story’ about the production of the song several years ago.

Carey told Billboard in 2017 that she created the song when she was a child.

“I’m proud of this song that I wrote when I was a kid, using my Casio keyboard,” she said.

However, Afanasieff, 64, has now come forward to claim that the five-time Grammy Award winner actually has no musical knowledge.

“She doesn’t play any musical instrument, she doesn’t play keyboard or piano. She doesn’t understand music, she doesn’t know about chord changes , music theory and so on.

“When dhe claimed to write a song with a very complicated chord structure, using only a Casio keyboard when she was a kid, it was as if she was doing her own thing.

“I studied music, I have a degree in music. I’m an orchestral music director and composer. I teach music. I’m not an idiot. I don’t play by ear ,” Afanasieff said.

Afanasieff said he and Carey wrote the song together while working on three songs for Carey’s Christmas album, Merry Christmas.

According to Afanasieff, the singer is responsible for the melody and lyrics while Afanasieff prepares the musical composition and chords.

So far Carey has not given any response regarding Afanasieff’s allegations.

Afanasieff and Carey are both credited as writers of that most popular Christmas song, with no other writers or producers.

They have collaborated several times, including for the album Emotions and Music Box.
