Thailand proposes to charge a tourist fee of RM39 starting in June

BANGKOK: Thailand plans to start collecting a fee of 300 baht (RM39.25) to foreign tourists arriving in the country starting next June, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported.

It is understood that the fee will be used to help tourists involved in accidents and develop tourist destinations.

“This fee is not collected from foreigners who have work permits and border passes,” said Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

The proposal was first considered last year and is subject to cabinet approval.

Phiphat said tourism expenditure is predicted to reach at least 2.38 trillion baht (RM311 billion) this year.

In 2019, Thailand welcomed 40 tourists in the country.
