Siti Nuramira court case adjourned again

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here has warned Siti Nuramira Abdullah, who is accused of creating an atmosphere of disharmony among Muslims, that her case hearing can be held at the woman’s home or in a hospital ward if she continues to not attend her hearing in court.

Judge Nor Hasniah Ab Razak issued the warning after lawyer R. Sivaraj, who represented Siti Nuramira, 27, informed the court that the accused was once again absent due to being admitted to a ward at the University of Malaya Medical Center (PPUM).

Yesterday, the same Sessions Court adjourned the hearing of the case because the woman was on sick leave due to gastroenteritis.

Nor Hasniah said since this is the second time the accused has not attended the trial, the court needs to see the accused’s medical report if she is again absent on the next trial date.

“I adjourn the case today and continue the trial on April 17. The parties (defense and prosecution) agreed on alternate trial dates today and yesterday on the 26th and 31st of May, while the accused’s bail was extended.

“This is the second MC (including yesterday). If there is still an MC after (April 17) the trial must continue either at the hospital or at her (Siti Nuramira’s) home,” she said at the proceedings which were also attended by Deputy Public Prosecutors Abdul Malik Ayob and Nadia Mohd Izhar

On July 13 last year, Siti Nuramira in a stage performance at the Crackhouse Comedy Club is said to have confessed to being a Muslim who memorized the 15 juzuk al-Quran before taking off her hijab and taking off her baju kurung, and that act caused an atmosphere of disharmony for religious reasons among believers Islam.

She was charged with committing the act at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here at 6pm on 4 June 2022 according to Section 298A (1) (a) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, if convicted.
