BANGKOK: The gimmick of Thai teenage rapper Danupha Kanateerakul who enjoyed mango glutinous rice while performing at the Coachella music festival, in the United States last weekend, sparked a new phenomenon with the popular Thai dish.

Danupha’s actions have sparked public interest and the Thai Department of Cultural Promotion feels it appropriate to consider an application to list the dessert as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Cultural Promotion Department director -general Chai Nakornchai in a statement said his department was gathering the necessary information to submit applications.

Danupha, 19, or better known as Milli, stole the world’s attention when she finished her performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California by eating mango glutinous rice while on stage.

His performance also became trending on Twitter on Sunday and since then mango glutinous rice sales have risen sharply.

Danupha, was once the focus of media attention in July last year when Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o-cha filed a defamation suit against him after the singer condemned Prayuth’s actions in managing the COVID-19 pandemic which he claimed was ineffective.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined 2,000 baht.
