Singapore invited Richard Branson to debate the issue of drugs, the death penalty
SINGAPORE: Singapore invited Sir Richard Branson to debate live on television about the republic’s approach to the issue of drugs and the death penalty with Minister of Law and Home Affairs K. Shanmugam.
“Branson’s flight to Singapore and accommodation will be paid for,” Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement on its website in response to the British billionaire and Virgin Group founder’s blog post on Oct 10, 2022.
According to the ministry, Branson can use this platform to show the people where they are wrong and why Singapore should abolish the law that has kept the people of this country safe from the global scourge of drug abuse.
MHA also commented on Branson’s claim about Malaysian D. Nagaenthran who has an “intellectual disability” and has been sentenced to death.
“We have made it clear several times that that is not true,” according to the MHA.
“The Singapore court found that Nagaenthran was aware of what he was doing and that he was not intellectually disabled.
“The psychiatrist also confirmed it in court that Nagaenthran is not intellectually disabled,” according to the MHA.
Branson in his post titled “World Day Against the Death Penalty: What’s the matter with Singapore?” said he had earlier this year joined a global community of advocates trying to stop the execution.
The Malaysian was sentenced to death for bringing 42.72 grams of heroin to Singapore.
