KUALA LUMPUR: Actor Sharnaaz Ahmad pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday to a charge of intentionally injuring a resident of a condominium in Jalan Dutamas six months ago.

Sharnaaz or real name Sharnaaz Ahmad Basir Ahmad, 38, as the person subject to the summons (OKS) made the confession after the charges were read before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim.

According to the charges, the ‘Juvana’ actor was charged with intentionally causing injury to a 26-year-old man, at a condominium in Jalan Dutamas here, at 8.30pm, 16 June 2022.

The charge is made under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a prison sentence of up to one year or a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both, if convicted.

During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor, Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal suggested that OKS be granted bail of RM5,000 with one surety.

However, lawyer Datuk Abu Bakar Isa Ramat who represented Sharnaaz pleaded for the bail rate to be reduced on the grounds that his client had cooperated well throughout the investigation.

“Sharnaaz is a famous actress, a widower with one child and also takes care of her five-year-old son,” he said.

After hearing requests from both parties, Atiqah allowed Sharnaaz to be bailed at RM2,000 with one surety and fixed March 6 for the case to be mentioned again.

In the middle of last year, the media reported, the 38-year-old actor was remanded for three days after being suspected of punching and kicking a condominium resident.

After being arrested, Sharnaaz said, the incident happened when a friend of the condominium resident brought cooking oil but did not have an access card.

In September 2017, he who once starred in the drama ‘Suamiku Encik Sotong’ was fined RM1,200 by the Magistrate’s Court here for causing injury by punching a Bangladeshi golf club employee.

He was charged with committing the offense against Gous Ali at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Brickfields at 5.30pm on 22 July 2017 and was charged under the same section.
