Several roads in George Town to close Saturday for Chingay parade

Police say shutdowns to be done in stages from 1pm, 5pm ahead of 7pm procession

GEORGE TOWN – Several roads in the George Town city area here will be closed on Saturday for the Penang Chingay procession, one of the biggest street processions at the Unesco world heritage site.

Northeast District police chief Soffian Santong said the roads will be closed in stages from 1pm and 5pm as the procession will begin at 7pm, with several programmes lined up for the area around Padang Kota Lama.

“The procession will start from Jalan Johor, which is next to Padang Brown, and end in front of the state assembly building at Jalan Lebuh Light here, and we will start closing the roads from 5pm from Jalan Datuk Keramat, Jalan Burma, Jalan Transfer, and Jalan Sri Bahari.

“The other roads to be closed are Jalan Penang, Lebuh Chulia, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Lebuh Farquhar, and Lebuh Light. Members of the public are advised to obey instructions from local authorities and plan their journeys to avoid congestion,” he told a media conference here today.

He also said that several roads around Padang Kota Lama, namely Jalan Padang Kota Lama, Lebuh Light/Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, King Edward/Lebuh Light roundabout, Jalan Tun Sheikh Barakbah, and Lebuh Downing/Lebuh Pantai would also be fully closed to vehicles.

He said a total of 10,000 visitors are expected to attend the procession and Penang City Council will provide nearly 1,000 parking spaces in the area.
