GEORGE TOWN: Several roads around George Town and the Penang Bridge from the island side to the other side will be closed in stages this Sunday in conjunction with the departure of the sixth stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) which starts in Penang.
North East District Police Chief ACP Soffian Santong said the departure of the LTdL Tour from Penang to Alor Setar, Kedah involving 120.4 kilometers will start at Padang Kota Lama, here at 8am, Sunday.
“Accordingly, to ensure the smooth running of the program there are several main routes from the release site which is Padang Kota Lama towards the Penang Bridge will be closed in stages which is Jalan Padang Kota Lama from 12.01 midnight to 12 noon on Sunday.
“The area of Jalan Padang Kota Lama was closed earlier to give way for vehicles involved in the LTdL Tour to prepare before departure at 8am on Sunday and then Jalan Syed Barakbah was closed from 12.01 midnight until 11am on Sunday,” he said at a press conference here. today.
He said Lebuh Light, Jalan Pengkalan Weld and Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu will be closed from 8am until it finishes, which is about 11am.
Soffian said in addition to the complete closure of vehicles entering the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway towards the Penang Bridge which involves several intersections such as the Gat Lebuh Perangin, Gat Lebuh Magazine, Lebuh Maccalum and Lebuh Cecil with all vehicles being diverted towards the city center only
He said vehicles from the direction of Sungai Pinang will be diverted towards the city center and towards Persiaran Karpal Singh only, i.e. a full closure will be made to the route to enter the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway towards Penang Bridge.
“Vehicles towards Jalan Ahmad Nor (Jelutong) and Jalan Tengku Kudin will be diverted towards the city center only while vehicles at the Gelugor roundabout towards Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. The entrance from Jalan Pantai Sinaran to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway will be completely closed to all type of vehicle,” he said.
He said the Penang Bridge entrance from the city center and Bayan Lepas was completely closed to all types of vehicles from 9 am until the end because the LTdL racers would be using the bridge route.
According to him, the public is advised to use alternative routes such as Jalan Jelutong and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah to avoid traffic jams and those who want to cross the island from the other side can use the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge.
“Road users are also advised to cooperate fully and comply with the instructions issued by the authorities in charge to ensure smooth running throughout the program,” he said.
He said 147 officers and policemen assisted by the Penang City Council and the Malaysian Volunteer Department will be on duty to ensure smooth traffic on the day.
