Sarawak Day 2022: A point of unification of the people together to develop the state – Abang Jo

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Day which is celebrated every year is a point of unification for the people to pursue the dream of making Sarawak a developed state by 2030.

According to the Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, it is very significant that the date 22 July 1963 is commemorated as the starting point for Sarawak to have the power to be governed by Sarawakians themselves.

It was when the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan was appointed as the first Chief Minister of the Sarawak Government.

”I am aware of the controversy surrounding the meaning and interpretation of Sarawak Day.

”However, what is more important is the spirit of all Sarawak children to prosper Sarawak in accordance with the theme of the celebration “Prosperous Sarawak” in any capacity and role regardless of religious and racial background,” he said at the Sarawak Day 2022 celebration at the Sibu Indoor Stadium on Friday.

He said, since the 100 years of the Brooke family’s rule, followed by the Japanese conquest and then the handover of Sarawak to the British administration, the state has never had a government governed by a native as Head of Government.

Therefore, it is appropriate to continue to commemorate the historic event of the takeover of the state administration by Sarawak’s own children.

”This year with the transition to the endemic phase we can have a bigger celebration.

”This is to commemorate the historic event that Sarawak children were given the authority to govern their own state exactly 59 years ago today,” he added.
