Renowned Tamil composer Ilaiyaraaja becomes a member of the Indian Parliament
NEW DELHI: Renowned Tamil music composer Ilaiyaraaja is now a member of the Indian Parliament, winning his nomination as a distinguished personality.
He was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on Monday.
Ilaiyaraaja was nominated earlier this month along with other luminaries, including athlete PT Usha, social worker Veerendra Heggade and film director V. Vijayendra Prasad.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Ilaiyaraaja as a figure whose music has “mesmerized people across generations.”
The 79-year-old composer has previously received national awards – Padma Bhushan in 2010 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018.
