Reduce the burden of street musicians, K-KOMM will discuss with several ministries
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM) will hold discussions with several ministries to find ways to reduce the burden on street musicians, including the issue of royalty payments.
Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin said, the discussion involved the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
“The issue that is pressuring the street musicians at the moment is related to site or license fees and also the royalties that they have to bear when we know that these people perform without any fees.
“There are some places where the local government charges quite a high fee, if possible we want to discuss so that it can be given for free or charge a minimal fee,” he said.
He said this to reporters after the Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia’s Leisure Session program with the Association of Friends of Malaysian Street Performers, here, today.
Regarding the royalty payment, Zahidi said, his party is also planning to establish a Music Corporation which is seen to help reduce the burden on street musicians.
“In addition, through the MyCreative Ventures initiative we will also see how we can hold a show that we organize ourselves which aims to give these street musicians the opportunity to perform,” he said.
