KUALA LUMPUR: Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi asked the community to be the eyes and ears of the authorities in order to prevent cases of mistreatment of children among the Disabled (OKU) from recurring.
The president of OKU Sentral said he will continue to fight for the plight of disabled children so that the incident that happened to Bella’s Down syndrome teenager does not happen again.
“I hope the community out there will be the eyes and ears of all of us to ensure that disabled children are not mistreated like what happened to Bella,” he told reporters after the proceedings in the case of Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali who was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Court Sessions is here for neglecting and abusing Bella.
Ras Adiba said today’s decision is a victory for the ‘Justice For Bella’ fighters who have worked hard to ensure that the case can be judged fairly.
“I am grateful because today we can see that justice is heard and Bella is a representative of disabled children out there and after this, no one will play with disabled people especially children who cannot speak for themselves.
“I would like to thank the Crown Prince of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Che’s wife Puan Besar Khaleeda Bustamam as well as all the volunteers and witnesses who have ensured that Bella gets the justice she deserves,” she said.
Datuk Baljit Singh Sindhu, who led the line of observant lawyers in the case, said he was happy with the court’s decision because justice was in Bella’s favor.
“Various government agencies need to analyze and learn from this case. It is time to look at all the children’s act and related laws and make appropriate amendments in Parliament,” he said.
Siti Bainun, 31, was ordered to serve a 12-year prison sentence immediately after the Sessions Court here rejected her application to postpone the execution of the sentence.
The woman was sent to Kajang Prison to serve the prison sentence starting today.
Judge Izralizam Sanusi sentenced Siti Bainun to 12 years in prison after finding her guilty of two counts of neglecting and abusing Bella, 13, in a condominium unit in Wangsa Maju between February and June 2021.
