Manjung police have raided premises in Sitiawan yesterday suspected of electricity theft to conduct illegal bitcoin mining involving losses up to RM20,000.
IPOH: The police raided a premises around Sitiawan near here yesterday that was suspected of illegally connecting electricity and carrying out bitcoin mining activities involving a loss of almost RM20,000.
Manjung District Police Chief ACP Nor Omar Sappi said the raid at about 9.30pm was carried out with the cooperation of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) special technicians and succeeded in seizing 36 bitcoin machines suspected of being involved in electricity theft activities in Manjung district.
“We have opened investigation papers under Section 427 of the Penal Code and 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 for investigation by the police,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Ipoh District Police Chief ACP Yahaya Hassan said his party has opened an investigation paper regarding the incident of large-scale burning of firecrackers and fireworks in Simpang Pulai which went viral on Facebook social media.
He said the 13-minute-46-second video went viral to attract public attention when the incident was done on the road.
“A check by the police found that the incident happened at 8 p.m., last Jan 23 in Kampung Baru Simpang Pulai and a police report has been made regarding the incident,” he said.
According to Yahaya, the case was investigated in accordance with Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957 (Act 207) and Section 286 of the Penal Code.
