
Pokemon cards sold for US$360,000 at Sotheby’s

NEW YORK: The most coveted and rare Pokemon game card sold for US$360,000 (RM1,487,920) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on Tuesday.
The 1998 Japanese “Pokemon Illustrator” holographic card, featuring the iconic cartoon character Pikachu has only 39 official copies.
Additionally, the card being auctioned this time is the only one known to be signed by Takumi Akabane, one of the three founders of the trading card game, according to Sotheby’s.
The successful seller and bidder are not disclosed.
The cards were previously awarded to the winners of a drawing competition in 1998 organized by the Japanese magazine, CoroCoro Comic.
One of the cards considered to be the most preserved was purchased for US$5,275,000 in 2021 and was recognized by Guinness World Records the following year as the most expensive Pokemon card.
