Perak aims to expand the 5G network to Kampar, Batu Gajah

IPOH: After the city of Ipoh, Perak is targeting Kampar and Batu Gajah as the next districts to enjoy 5G high-speed internet coverage.

Chairman of the Perak Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee Mohd Azlan Helmi said the initiative under ‘Greater Ipoh’ was to ensure that all districts in the Kinta Valley would gain internet access in the future.

He said, his party will propose the establishment of a coordinating body for the development of 5G access in the districts outside Ipoh in the State Government Council Meeting (MMK) in the near future.

“We will discuss in the MMK whether to establish a coordinating body which is the Digital Council, or give that role to the existing state government subsidiary (GLC) which is Digital Perak.

“The coordinator will be responsible for coordinating, collecting data and so on related to the development of 5G in Perak so that it is more organized.

“We want this 5G network to be expanded in all districts in the Kinta Valley and for that the state government will be more proactive in this effort,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after attending the 5G Briefing and Visit to the Ipoh Integrated Operations Center at the Perak Urban Transformation Center (UTC) here today.

Also present were the Chairman of the State Housing and Local Government Committee, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching and the Mayor of Ipoh, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

In addition, Mohd Azlan said, the effort is also in line with the Fourth Focus in the New Year’s Message delivered by Perak Chief Minister Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad recently, which is ‘Encompassing Initiatives and Digital Infrastructure’.

He added that the state government will carry out the bleaching process of telecommunication transmitter towers on buildings throughout the state in the near future in collaboration with Digital Perak and the Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).

Meanwhile, Rumaizi said that so far more than 40 percent of areas throughout Ipoh have received access to 5G access at a speed of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) which includes Pusat Bandar, Tambun, Bercham, Meru, Klebang and Pasir Puteh.

“If we follow the federal government’s target, on December 31 next year we can achieve more than that percentage for the 5G network in Ipoh.

“However, I told my officers to achieve 80 percent 5G coverage in all areas in Ipoh, by the end of this year as well,” he said.
