Palestinians hand over bullets causing the death of Al Jazeera reporters to the US
RAMALLAH: Palestinian Attorney General Akram Al-Khatib on Saturday revealed the bullet that caused the death of veteran Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May had been handed over to the United States, Xinhua reported.
The ammunition will not be handed over to Israeli authorities but instead handed over to the United States for inspection, Al-Khatib told Palestinian News Agency WAFA.
Palestinians claimed the results of an investigation in May, found Shireen was shot “intentionally” by a sniper but denied Israel described it as a “blatant lie.”
Israel had asked the Palestinians to hand over the ammunition for a joint investigation, but the request was denied.
“We agreed to allow a team of U.S. special experts to conduct a technical inspection on the ammunition and the evidence was handed over to the team that had just arrived in the country.
“The inspection will be conducted at the US embassy in Jerusalem,” Al-Khatib said.
Abu Akleh, 51, who worked as an Al Jazeera reporter born in Jerusalem, was killed by a live bullet to the head on May 11 while on duty reporting an Israeli military incursion at the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.
The incident received great international condemnation.
In June, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki met International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan in The Hague to hand over the results of an investigation into Abu Akleh’s death.
