Pakistani TV celebrity and politician Aamir Liaquat dies aged 49
NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s leading television host and politician Aamir Liaquat Hussain, who has often sparked controversy, died in the city of Karachi on Thursday at the age of 49.
Aamir Liaquat was found unconscious at his home and rushed to hospital but failed to be rescued, Pakistani media reported.
In a recent video released on social media, the television celebrity spoke about his intention to leave Pakistan after a “indecent” video clip of himself was revealed by his third wife Dania Shah.
Their marriage, announced in February, ended when Dania filed for divorce and claimed she was abused.
A few hours before his death, Twitter operator Aamir Liaquat rewrote journalist Hamza Azhar Salam’s tweet.
“Just spoke to @AamirLiaquat who confirmed that he has left #Pakistan and moved to an unknown place after performing Umrah. Wishing all the best for #AamirLiaquat,” the reporter wrote.
Hamza said Aamir Liaquat had sent a voice note to him at 6.32pm on Wednesday.
“We are all responsible for his death. He became a victim of revenge, his mental state is deteriorating but we continue to bully him for our own benefit. Pakistan lost one of its citizens today,” he said on Twitter on Thursday.
President Arif Alvi, former president Asif Ali Zardari, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, former interior minister Sheikh Rashid and Senator Faisal Javed Khan were among those who offered condolences.
He lived a “dynamic life from journalism to politics,” Bilawal said.
Aamir Liaquat served as minister during the reign of Pervez Musharraf.
He joined the party of former prime minister Imran Khan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2018 and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Karachi in the same year. Earlier, he was a member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
