Pakistani journalist shot dead in Kenya
NEW DELHI: Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was reportedly shot dead in Kenya.
“Today I lost a friend, a husband and a journalist I love, according to the police he was shot in Kenya,” his wife Javeria Siddique said on Twitter on Monday.
The incident sparked outrage among journalists and activists in Pakistan.
In television shows and social media, he often criticized the way former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted in April.
“Shocked by the brutal killing of Arshad Sharif…He had to leave the country and hide abroad but remained vocal on social media. Today the whole country mourns his passing,” said Imran.
ARY television channel last August announced that it was no longer with Arshad Sharif after eight years of working under one roof.
Before that, Arshad Sharif left Pakistan for fear of his safety.
The 49-year-old journalist is one of the most popular names in Pakistan.
“The passing of Arshad Sharif is a great loss to journalism and Pakistan. May his soul rest in peace and may his family including his followers persevere in the face of this allegation,” said President Arif Alvi.
